Friends Host Christmas Party at Legion

A great time was had by all at the Friends of Legion's Christmas Party and Tree Trimming on Saturday, November 30 at the Lodge at Legion. There was plenty of delicious food and desserts and some wonderful live entertainment as we celebrated the holiday season!


Friends Meet to Plan Christmas Party and Discuss 501c Status

Members of the Friends of Legion State Park met on Thursday (Sept 12) to get an update on the organization's 501c3 status and to plan the upcoming Christmas party.

The tax exempt status of the organization had lapsed as it's 501C paperwork had lapsed. Group president Frances Ball has been working with State Senator Giles Ward and members of U.S. Representative Alan Nunnelee's staff to renew Friends tax exemption. Recent information indicates that the group will need to refile its application. The group hopes to achieve this status by year's end.

Plans are also in the works for the Annual Friends of Legion Christmas Party to be held at the Lodge on November 30th. More details as the event approaches.

Big Crowd at our Summer Picnic

 The Friends of Legion would like to thank everyone who came out to our annual summer picnic on Tuesday night (June11) A big crowd of more than 60 were entertained by the Wells Family and enjoyed some great BBQ plates as well. A special thanks to all those who helped, Tim Flake and the Wells Family.

FOL would also like to thank Taylor Machine Works, the Louisville Rotary Club, Wells Church Furniture and the Louisville Lions Club for their generous donations to the Park.











Nature Walk

Thanks to everyone who participated in Monday's Nature Walk at Legion. The walk was hosted by Dr. Lelia Kelly, Professor of Horticulture at Mississippi State University. We had a good turnout and the weather was great!

Join Us June 11 for Food and Music!


As part of the Friends of Legion State Park's (FOL) effort to increase the park usage and increase
membership in the organization, FOL will host a summer picnic at the Lodge at Legion on Tuesday, June 11 at 6:00. Folks are invited to come out and enjoy some great barbeque and music while learning more about the activities of Friends of Legion and this historic state park within the city limits of Louisville. Take this opportunity to visit Legion and see the changes and improvements made recently and to learn about some exciting projects.

Scheduled to perform are the Wells Brothers from Noxapater and Tracy McCully.

Friends of Legion State Park was founded as an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, dedicated to preserving and maintaining the Park through volunteer work and fund raising. Friends of Legion State Park hold general membership meetings in the historic lodge at the Park. Programs, fundraising ideas and projects to aid the Park are part of the Friends itinerary. Nature Walk Scheduled for June 3

Come join in a guided nature walk at Legion State Park on June 3rd. The walk begins at 8:30 and will be hosted by Dr. Lelia Kelly, Professor of Horticulture at Mississippi State University. This is a great opportunity to learn while exploring our park - also an opportunity for Scouts to
achieve some merit badge goals!

Father/Son Nature Walk - June 3

The Fish Were Bitin!!

We had a great time at Saturday's (May 4 ) Kids N Kats Fishing Rodeo. After all that rain, the skies cleared on Saturday morning and even though it was unusually cold for May, we still had a big crowd as we registered 75 kids!! ..... And the fishing was great!! Every one caught a fish and some had large stringers and full buckets.

FOL would like to thank all those who helped or contributed to the event!!

Woodmen Of the World Spring Cookout at Legion

Woodmen Lodge 102 invited all members and families to their First Annual Spring Cookout under the Pavilion by the lake at Legion State Park, Saturday, April 20. Woodmen members also invited the Friends of Legion State Park to the event. Food, fun and fellowship was enjoyed by all. Woodmen Lodge 102 also gave a generous donation to Friends of the Park. An appreciation certificate was presented to Woodman Lodge 102 by Friends of the Park President Francis Ball for their generous donation.

Kids N Kats Fishing Rodeo on May 4th

The annual Kids N Kats Fishing Rodeo is coming up at Legion State Park on Saturday, May 4th. Youth from ages 4 to 12 are invited to come out to the lake and participate. Prizes and lunch including hotdogs will be available.

The MDWFP will stock the lake with up to 500 catfish prior to the rodeo, providing an opportunity for kids to participate in a great American sport. Friends of Legion will be aiding with the event.

Here's what you need to know:
  • Registration begins at 7:00 am on Saturday morning and will continue til 9:00 am.
  • After opening ceremonies and an announcement of rules and regulations, fishing will begin at 8:00 am
  • Restroom and handwashing facilities will be made available.
  • Rodeo open to kids from 4-12 years of age.
  • All kids must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or responsible adult.
  • All participants must register and receive a wristband.
  • Participants should bring their own fishing tackle and bait (cut weinies or cocktail sausages are excellent)
  • Only one rod per child.
Prizes will be awarded and other activities will be available for the kids as well.

Easter Sunrise Services at the Park

Easter Sunrise Services are scheduled for 6:30 am on March 31 at the Lodge. Services provided by the Winston Baptist Association.

MDWFP Holds Board Meeting at Legion Lodge


A crowd of more than 50 local citizens joined the Board and Staff from the Mississippi State Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks as the Commission conducted a scheduled meeting at the historic lodge at Legion State Park in Louisville.

Friends of Legion State Park(FOLSP), has encouraged locals to attend and show their support for the local facility. The Commissioners were welcomed by Frances Ball, President of FOLSP, Tim Flake, Park Manager and local Senator Giles Ward. Ball thanked the Commission for the recent renovation of the Lodge at Legion and expressed the local community's desire that the Park remain open.

Commissioners commented on the obvious support that the Park has in the local area and indicate that no changes to the Park's status were under consideration.

Come out and show your support for Legion on February 11th at 10:30 am as the Commissioners of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks visit the Park.  Those in Jackson need to know how our community treasures Legion, its history, natural beauty and economic impact on our area.  Take a few moments out of your day to discuss your concerns and express your opinions.
